Lameness and Poor Performance
Lameness and Poor Performance
Lameness is a common problem in many horses. Lameness may be very obvious or may be incredibly subtle and only manifest itself as poor performance.

At Malton Equine, our team of vets are experienced in investigating all causes of lameness and poor performance, including back problems; and in initiating appropriate treatments for these conditions.

Lameness investigations involve taking a thorough history before conducting a clinical examination and gait assessment. Clinical examination will usually include observation, palpation and manipulation of the musculoskeletal system.

Gait assessment may include evaluation of the horse at walk and trot in hand while lunging on both hard and soft surfaces. In some cases, we may recommend observation of your horse’s gait while being ridden as some causes of lameness are exacerbated under saddle.

If the source of the lameness is not readily identifiable, a more in-depth assessment may be required, involving regional diagnostic analgesia (nerve blocks). Various imaging modalities contribute to the lameness work-up, including ultrasonography and radiographs (X-rays), which can be performed on the yard.

Depending on the diagnosis, a treatment plan will be recommended which may include controlled exercise, medication, farriery or surgery. We often work alongside physiotherapists and chiropractors to help facilitate a holistic approach to your horse’s recovery and ongoing management.

Emergency veterinary attention for your horse may be required at any time of the day or night. We provide veterinary care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to registered clients.
