Malton Equine Veterinary Services
Mare Reproductive Services
Occasionally, a mare will conceive twins. Due to the very rare survival of twin pregnancies to term it is recommended to reduce one of the embryos to result in a single remaining pregnancy.
This is best done prior to implantation of the embryo between days 13-16 to minimise trauma to the uterus and remaining conceptus and involves applying manual pressure through the rectal wall over one embryo, guided using ultrasound. Occasionally, pregnant mares are referred to us that have passed this optimal window and an alternative, more risky approach is required to reduce the number of embryos to one. Please get in touch if you would like more information on twin reduction or if you would like to refer a case to us.
Emergency veterinary attention for your horse may be required at any time of the day or night. We provide veterinary care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to registered clients.
